Adopting a Sustainable Development Strategy in Vietnam is extremely important, especially as storms, floods and natural disasters become increasingly frequent.
Why a sustainable development strategy is needed!
- Mitigating the impact of natural disasters
– Environmental protection: A sustainable development strategy helps protect and restore the natural environment, reducing the risk of floods and landslides. Afforestation and the protection of upstream watershed forests are among the most important measures for mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
– Water resource management: Using and managing water resources sustainably helps reduce the risk of drought and flooding while ensuring clean water for communities.
- Strengthening community resilience
– Sustainable infrastructure development: Building highly resilient infrastructure, such as drainage systems, dykes and solid housing, helps reduce damage and protect human lives.
– Education and awareness-raising: Strengthening education and raising community awareness of disaster prevention and environmental protection measures helps communities protect themselves against disaster risks.
- Promoting sustainable economic development
– Sustainable agriculture: Applying sustainable farming methods increases crops’ resilience to climate change while protecting land and water resources.
– Attracting green investment: Businesses that adopt a sustainable development strategy can attract green investment capital, supporting sustainable economic development and creating more jobs.
- Meeting the national sustainable development goals
– National goals: Vietnam has set 17 sustainable development goals to 2030, including responding effectively to climate change and natural disasters, protecting and developing forests sustainably, and ensuring sustainable production and consumption.
Adopting a sustainable development strategy not only helps mitigate the impact of natural disasters but also promotes economic development, protects the environment and improves people’s quality of life.
Some sustainable development projects and measures currently being implemented in Vietnam:
- Afforestation and forest protection projects
- Mangrove planting projects: Mangrove planting projects in coastal provinces such as Quảng Ninh, Nam Định and Cà Mau aim to protect the coastline and reduce the impact of storms, floods and soil erosion.
- Upstream watershed forest protection projects: Projects to protect and restore upstream watershed forests in mountainous provinces such as Lào Cai, Yên Bái and Hà Giang help reduce the risk of floods and landslides.
- Developing sustainable agriculture
- Smart agriculture projects: Applying high technology in agricultural production, such as automated irrigation systems and biotechnology-based pest management, increases productivity and reduces negative environmental impacts.
- Organic farming projects: Encouraging farmers to switch to organic production, reducing the use of chemicals and protecting land and water resources.
- Developing renewable energy
- Solar power projects: Solar power projects in provinces such as Ninh Thuận, Bình Thuận and Tây Ninh are being rolled out strongly, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment.
- Wind power projects: Wind power projects in coastal provinces such as Bạc Liêu, Sóc Trăng and Bình Định are also attracting investment, generating clean and sustainable energy.
- Education and community awareness-raising
- Climate change education programmes: Education programmes on climate change and environmental protection are being implemented in schools and communities, raising awareness and changing people’s behaviour.
- Sustainable development communication campaigns: Communication campaigns on sustainable development and environmental protection are run through the mass media, spreading the message and calling on the community to act.
- International cooperation and attracting green investment
- Cooperation with international organisations: Vietnam is working with international organisations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and non-governmental organisations to implement sustainable development projects.
- Attracting green investment: Vietnamese businesses are working to improve their ESG disclosure in order to attract green capital from international investment funds, supporting sustainable economic development.
Implementing these projects and measures not only helps mitigate the impact of natural disasters but also promotes economic development, protects the environment and improves people’s quality of life.
