In October 2024, in Hanoi, Mr. Phạm Quốc Hưng – a Business Continuity Planning (BCP) professional certified by the Disaster Recovery Institute (DRI) – co-delivered an ISO 22301 training programme for Viettel Global.
1. Business continuity management under ISO 22301
Business continuity management – under ISO 22301 – is the holistic management of an organisation that identifies potential threats to the organisation and the impact they would have on business operations should they occur. It provides a policy and regulatory framework for developing business continuity plans and strengthening the organisation’s operational resilience, so as to safeguard the interests of all stakeholders when an incident occurs, while helping to maintain the organisation’s reputation, brand and the trust placed in it.
Globally, 30% of Fortune 2000 companies have invested in building a BCM system. ISO 22301:2012 has only been applied since 2014. Survey data show that in 2014 more than 1,600 organisations were certified. By 2015, this figure had risen to more than 3,100 organisations, nearly double the 2014 figure.
In Vietnam, according to BSI – © The British Standards Institution 2019, as of October 2019 only about 10 organisations in Vietnam had been granted ISO 22301 certification for their BCM systems by BSI, mainly in logistics, transport and multinational companies. Some companies in Vietnam have begun developing and issuing business continuity plans (BCP), a component of the BCM system. The plan to apply ISO 22301 for Vietnamese businesses is part of the National Programme “Improving the productivity and quality of Vietnamese products, goods and services”.
2. Effectiveness and benefits of the training programme
The programme was designed to build a solid knowledge foundation and develop practical application skills, enabling Viettel Global to confidently handle emergencies and maintain business continuity.
Benefits:
- Provides comprehensive knowledge of the standard, helping the risk management and internal audit teams clearly understand how the clauses interrelate and how they can be applied within the organisation.
- Focuses on the practical application of the standard’s clauses, giving the risk management team deeper insight into implementing ISO 22301.
Objectives:
Ensure that every member has a solid basic knowledge of ISO 22301 and is able to analyse and apply its clauses in the organisation’s day-to-day operations.
According to research, the cost of building and implementing an incident prevention and business continuity management (BCM) system is only 1/7 of the cost of remedying an incident. Implementing business continuity management delivers the following benefits:
- Supports the achievement of strategic business objectives.
- Creates competitive advantage, protecting and enhancing the company’s reputation and standing.
- Increases partners’ confidence in the company’s success.
- Reduces costs and legal and financial losses, as well as the direct and indirect impacts caused by business disruption.
- Strengthens the company’s ability to maintain operational effectiveness during a disruptive event.
- Supports the company’s ability to recover after incidents.
During the course, participants at Viettel Global were very enthusiastic, actively sharing and asking the trainer questions about issues surrounding ISO 22301 and Mr. Phạm Quốc Hưng’s practical experience in implementing business continuity management. As a result, participants can apply this in operational management at Viettel Global as well as at Viettel Global’s offices in other countries.
Mr. Phạm Quốc Hưng at the training session
Any incident, large or small, natural, accidental or deliberate, has the potential to cause major disruption to an organisation’s operations and its ability to deliver products and services. However, building and implementing BCM before such events occur allows the organisation to continue operating and keep the impact and consequences of an incident at an acceptable level. This can be regarded as part of an organisation’s or business’s risk management to ensure sustainable development! Implementing BCM not only helps the organisation maintain business continuity but also protects core assets and ensures staff readiness in an emergency.
At VietESG, we have Mr. Phạm Quốc Hưng – Business Continuity Professional certified by DRII, who is also a Lead Auditor for ISO 22301 – Business Continuity Management Systems – BSI x IRCA.
